New acquisition to boost insect-based protein production

Ÿnsect, a global provider of natural insect protein for human and animal consumption, has acquired Protifarm, which manufactures mealworm ingredients for human food applications. Early this year, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) declared that mealworms safe for human consumption. The joining of the two European companies would accelerate manufacturing capabilities for insect-based food ingredients.
"The evolution of a more sustainable intake of nutrition is only at its beginning, but the demand for products meeting these standards is set to grow exponentially in the coming years. The consolidation of Protifarm with Ÿnsect will expand our scale to meet this demand globally," said Tom Mohrmann, CEO of Protifarm.
According to a new publication from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), edible insects can diversify diets, improve livelihoods, contribute to food and nutrition security, and have a lower ecological footprint than other protein sources. FAO said the potential benefits combined with a heightened interest in exploring alternative food sources are spurring commercial production of insects as food and animal feed. (Image from Pixabay)
