Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio is the latest investor in sustainable cultivated beef. The actor will come on board as an investor and advisor to Aleph Farms in Israel and Mosa Meat in The Netherlands.
According to data shared by the companies, global meat consumption will grow 40-70% by 2050. Thus, cultivated meat offers a solution to reduce the current negative impacts of industrial beef production. Analysts have projected the grown meat market could reach US$25 billion by 2030 as part of the broader protein transformation.
An independent Life Cycle Analysis study revealed that cultivated beef production could reduce climate impact by 92%. These include air pollution by 93%, use 95% less land and 78% less water when compared to industrial beef production. Cultivated beef production offers the opportunity to use the spare land for re-wilding habitats, naturally reducing emissions or producing more food for people.
Furthermore, the automated meat cultivation process, and the sterile environment of its manufacturing, will eliminate the use of antibiotics. These factors will significantly reduce the risk for pathogens, contaminants, and foodborne illnesses associated with concentrated and intensive animal farming. (Image from Unsplash)
