Italy tempts China with fruits and vegetables

Italy will hold the China Italy Fresh Summit to showcase its best fruit and vegetables to entice the Chinese market. Scheduled on September 6, 2021, Macfrut, an Italian fruit and vegetable tradeshow group, organised the event.
After almost two years of instability due to the COVID-19 pandemic, trade between Italy and China grew. Data released by the Italian government reveal that from January to April 2021, the total Italian exports to China reached €5 billion (US$5.9 billion). During the same period in 2020, exports to China reached only €3.2 billion. Italy's agricultural export to China is at €44.4 million, while machinery and equipment exports reached 3.7 billion.
Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) said 2020 was a year of stability for EU agri-food trade. Last year, the value of EU agri-food exports increased to €184.3 billion (a growth of 1.4% compared to 2019). China, Switzerland and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region were the major growth destinations for EU agri-food exports in 2020. In the case of China, the value of exports rose by €3.22 billion compared to 2019, driven by demand for pork, wheat, and infant food. (Image from Unsplash)
