The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) recently awarded an ASI Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard certification to Spanish brewery Estrella Damm. The brewery is the first beverage company in the world to receive this double certification.
The ASI promotes greater sustainability and transparency throughout the aluminium industry. As consumers demand greater sustainability from their packaged goods, ASI said its scheme aims to make sustainability performance a mainstream issue. This scheme is similar to what the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) did for paper and wood packaging.
The brewery's certification covers packaging and storage of beer in cans and related activities, including design, packaging and storage of finished products, waste management and storage, and the recovery of waste, including the end consumer's packaging waste. (Image from Unsplash)
